Lead Paint Rule

The EPA's long-awaited Lead: Renovation, Repair and Painting rule was issued last week, and it will take effect in April 2010. The rule applies to all remodeling projects that disturb more than six square feet of painted surfaces for residential and multifamily structures built prior to 1978 that are inhabited pregnant women and children under age six. The rule requires a cleaning inspection after the work is done and lists prohibited work practices ¯ including open-torch burning and using high-heat guns and high-speed equipment such as grinders and sanders unless equipped with a HEPA filter. The rule also establishes required lead-safe work practices, including posting warning signs, using disposable plastic drop cloths, and cleaning the work area with HEPA vacuuming and wet washing. Remodelers will also need to attain a lead-safe work practices certification through a training course. NAHB Remodelers is studying the training requirements and may develop a lead-safe work practices training course for members. For copies of the educational brochures on the program, call the EPA’s National Lead Information Center at 800-424-LEAD (5323).

I give it 5 years and we'll have a full abatement program for lead paint too.

Keep in mind Grumpy, the article mentions that this rule only applies to areas inhabited by pregnant women and children under age 6. You have to admit that those precautions are well advised.
