Jonathan Sweet - Remodeling Notes

Jay Sweet
As senior editor of Professional Remodeler, a lot of information crosses my desk. This blog will be a chance to share some of that with you, with an immediacy not possible with a monthly magazine. It's also your chance to tell me what you think about what I have to say. Whether you agree or disagree, I hope you won't be shy.

Housing Industry Ain't What it Used to Be

Want an indicator of how far the housing industry has fallen? Well, how about the announcement today of the 2009 IBS Keynote Speaker: former Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz.

No offense to Mr. Holtz, but it's hardly on par with Rudy Giuliani, Colin Powell and the first President Bush, to name a few of the speakers I've seen during my trips to IBS. I'm still trying to decide how it matches up with last year's Mary Matalin/James Carville double-team. Let's call that one a wash.

I would suggest you withhold judgment on Lou Holtz until after his speech. He is one of the best inspirational speakers in the country, and if there was ever an industry that could use a bit of a “pick me up” it is ours. I am looking forward to being there!

I'm not saying he won't do a good job. I'm just saying it shows a declining profile (and budget!) for our industry. Frankly, I've never understood the need for a keynote speaker in the first place. Knowing the six-figure fees some of the previous speakers usually charge, it's nice to see NAHB spend a little less!
