Jonathan Sweet - Remodeling Notes

Jay Sweet
As senior editor of Professional Remodeler, a lot of information crosses my desk. This blog will be a chance to share some of that with you, with an immediacy not possible with a monthly magazine. It's also your chance to tell me what you think about what I have to say. Whether you agree or disagree, I hope you won't be shy.

Keep an eye out for fake checks

The popular "fake check" scam is taking a construction-related twist:

Basically, the way check scams work is that you'd receive a check (say, for $10,000) from someone claiming you won a contest or lottery, but need to send them a check (for $10, $20, $200, whatever) to cover associated fees. Weeks later, you find out the original check bounced and you're out the fees.

It's an amazingly successful con, especially when the checks appear to come from a trusted source, such as NAHB in this case. The important thing is to make sure everyone in your office knows not cash any unsolicted checks. For more information on check scams in general, visit www.fakechecks.org.
