By the end of next month, we should know what the new lead paint rules from EPA will be, but early indications are that it will include some testing/clearance component.

This has been a major sticking point for NAHB, as it would drastically increase the costs for remodelers working in any homes that could have lead paint (basicall any home built before 1978).

In preparation for the new regs, the NAHB Remodelers has spent $55,000 to hire an outside law firm to research what legal arguments the group could make in a potential lawsuit against the EPA. That report should be done by the next board meetings in April, where the group could then decide to move forward with the suit.

In the meantime, NAHB Remodelers is also exploring various education options as thousands of remodelers will need to be trained to deal with the new rules in a very short time.

There's a lot we don't know yet, but stay tuned. This is probably one of the most game-changing issues remodelers have had to face in years.
