By Jonathan Sweet.

As editor in chief of Professional Remodeler, a lot of information crosses my desk. This blog will be a chance to share some of that with you, with an immediacy not possible with a monthly magazine. It's also your chance to tell me what you think about what I have to say. Whether you agree or disagree, I hope you won't be shy. Post here, write me at jonathan.sweet@reedbusiness.com or you can also follow me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/sweetedit.

LAS VEGAS - As I wrote last night, so far I haven't been seeing a lot of new stuff here at IBS. Keep in mind that I'm only seeing a handful of the hundreds of exhibitors here, so this isn't really a "best of" -- more a "best I've seen." Our Product Guy, Nick Bajzek, will have more coverage of IBS products coming up later in print and online.

Two products jumped out at me:

  • Georgia-Pacific's XJ 85 I-joists. Although GP introduced them last year, the company is really putting a push behind them this year. For those of you not familiar with it, the XJ 85 comes precut with openings for wiring, HVAC, plumbing, etc. Very cool and a big time saver.
  • The Foundry Weathered Perfection Siding from The Tapco Group. I'm not usually impressed by vinyl siding, but this is great looking stuff. I had to touch it to believe it was vinyl. The finish on this stuff is unbelievable.

Unfortunately we could not attend but definetely have some new stuff for the industry that is simply ground breaking for contractors. Everyone needs to be connected using the Internet or you simply will not be able to make it in this business. A challenge has been to get subcontractors to use a solution in conjunction with a general contractor and also being able to use it for their business outside the relationship with a general contractor. MyOnlineToolbox is a real platform that will take the industry to the next level. Anyone growing from a sole proprietor to a larger remodeling company should check out MyOnlineToolbox.com. Smaller contractors can get away with the Free version (by the way sponsored by REED by going to www.housingzone.com/proremodeler and selecting the FREE SUBSCRIPTION advertisement in the Reader Service section). Rarely has a solution come along that allows some one to sign up (for free), quickly start using it and also be allowed to bring in all their subcontractors (for free). There is also a paid for version for larger companies. We would enjoy a contractor reading this post providing feedback based on their knowledge of the existing solutions out ther and thinking about what has prohibited the masses from going online. Good luck with the rest of the show. Brian
