A Musing on Modular

08-08-08 is remarkably both the start of the summer Olympics in Beijing and the combination to my briefcase. It’s also a great day to spread the word about a new blog catering to the modular home building industry.
Modular Musings, run by the staff of Excel Homes, looks like a pretty comprehensive blog, despite starting less than a month ago. And no, this won’t be just another cheerleader site dressed up like a blog—I’d name names and post links and tell you to where those are and to avoid those like you would a rabid cat, but that’s just not my game.

There are two reasons I’m commenting on this new blog in particular. One, the site looks great. It sports a logical layout, has a great typeface that’s easy on the eyes, and will feature a ton of voices from both inside and outside Excel Homes. I am also a HUGE proponent of modular home building. I’ve seen modular homes assembled in the factory and I’ve seen the finished product on site after site. I’m consistently blown away by the efficiency, accuracy and speed at which these homes go up and how sharp they look when it’s all said and done. Plus there’s a fraction of the waste on these sites when compared to stick building sites.
Famous last words alert: I think modular is the future of home building. So, builders, I invite you to check out the site and pay close (very, very close) attention to the industry.

Nick,I believe your famous last words are correct.I am a sales person for Bay To Beach Builders. We are an exclusive preferred builder for Beracah Homes,a 250 a year modular home builder located in Delaware. As times have gotten tough we have seen our market share increase. Thanks for noticing.

Thanks for reading Marc! I appreciate the comment. I find it remarkable that modular, once a "dirty" word in the business, is likely going to leave traditional frame building in the dust before too long.

I was a manufacture rep. for a modular manufacture. The only advantage I saw was modular homes helped non-business people/builders stay on budget. The Prices where higher, the quality lower, and the contracts were lopsided in the manufactures favor & bankers scared of modular. Given the economy of scale, track building is more desirable.

spf dude--thanks for the comments. I think what you said is kind of what used to be the case. The quality of the homes I've seen is, honestly and without hyperbole, unsurpassed. You might be right with banks, at least for now. But you simply can't beat the quality controls and speed at which these are going up. Since the industry is in a slump I'd say it's far too early to start speculating on when exactly modular building starts keeping pace with stick building. But I'm telling you, it will happen! I'll keep watching this story as long as you keep reading! Thanks again.
