I have one builder buddy who I run ideas past all the time—he’s been used as an “unnamed source” once before (hey, unlike some of the bigger newspapers, I rarely use a confidential source). He loves this kind of technology. It allows him, he says, some measure of satisfaction to know his guys aren’t slacking off on the job. “I love it,” says the source, “My guys were wary when I started bringing in field punch clocks. I told them, hey, if you’re not doing anything wrong, you got nothing to worry about.”

The system installs on any fuel, lube, or pickup truck, or on fuel stations or remote bulk tanks, so it’s good for builders in far-flung areas as well. The system can work alone or in conjunction with the company’s line of Service Trackers—these wireless hour meter and data loggers track equipment hours, mileage, service alerts, plus engine idle and work times, and other data logs.
