Meyda’s 34-foot Chandelier

It’s not every day a company makes a chandelier that could be used in Zeus’ house. But after eight months of design and planning (and another four months of manufacturing), Meyda Lighting has finally finished an astoundingly large chandelier in its Yorkville, NY facility.
Made for a local performing arts theater, the fixture measures 34 feet in diameter, is 17 feet tall and weighs 3-1/2 tons!
Crafted from steel, glass and acrylic, the chandelier was assembled in sections of tubular steel trusses. Each truss sports a steel arm with a red glass-eyed serpent spiraling down. Since the sheer number of candles would probably create as much heat as a blast furnace, the company used blown-glass diffusers that look like the tips of a candle’s flame and the sculpted steel candlesticks have simulated wax drippings. Illumination is actually provided by more than 200 medium-base LED lamps.
According to the company, the chandelier, which was designed to fit into the theater’s Mexican baroque/Moorish theme, is hand-finished in Antique Gold and Bronze to match the interior decor.
