Ladies and gentlemen,
I present to you the first winner of the "Why Didn't I Think of That?" Award: The Square Check.
It'll save you time and money in addition to preventing a heap of frustration…and it only costs $5.19 retail.

It’s a wonderfully simple concept, hence the award. The Square Check by Rockler Woodworking and Hardware attaches to your tape measurer via a “rare-earth” magnet and provides a bracket attachment point for one end, securely straddling right-angle corners so you won’t have to walk back around a project or throw the measurer and try to re-hook (often without success). The inner core rotates 360 degrees to accommodate any rectangular object. The slot for the hook measures 1-1/8-inch, so it’s wide enough for most tape measurer models.
