Tamper-Resistant Devices and the 2008 NEC

One addition to the 2008 NEC Code is section 406.11, which requires all electrical receptacles in newly constructed homes to be tamper-resistant.
Following the 2008 guidelines is Leviton. According to the company, they are among the first to have a complete line of compliant tamper-resistant receptacles. Their offerings include 15- and 20-Amp residential and commercial-grade devices, including duplex receptacles and combination units in a variety of colors. The company also offers their SmartLockPRO Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters.
The products feature protective shutters designed to accept only a two-prong electrical plug, while preventing the insertion of foreign objects. “These receptacles offer a higher measure of safety than plastic outlet caps, which can be removed or broken, and shuttered wall plates, which can crack or break, and are no longer UL listed,” says Leviton’s Jay Sherman, director of marketing for residential products.
