Harbor Park developers converted the site of a former automobile assembly facility in downtown Kenosha into a vibrant center of activity that includes landscaped parks, plazas, a 500-slip marina, a light-rail electric streetcar system, a museum and a mixed-use residential neighborhood. Designers paid careful attention to the development's pedestrian and landscaping elements so the high density (28.44 dwelling units per acre) would not become oppressive to residents or passersby. The goal for the 351-unit project was to incorporate several types of housing - condominiums, townhomes and duplex villas - that would appeal to a wide range of buyers, such as second-home and first-time buyers, empty nesters, retirees and single professionals. It took funding from many public and private sources to accomplish the environmental cleanup, infrastructure improvements and cultural enhancements for the Harbor Park project. The resulting development has become the economic engine for the rebirth of the surrounding lakefront community. New restaurants, shops and other commercial enterprises have sprung up in response to the increased property values and disposable income generated by this project.
