The Affordable Design Home was developed from site plan to completed product to address the demand for quality affordable housing for the family profiles typical of today's major cities as well as those in small communities. The home was intended for low- to moderate-income families ranging from three to eight members. Architects chose a design that accommodates a site-planning concept adaptable to planned-unit developments, cities with inclusionary zoning ordinances, inner-city infill projects and community land trusts. Adaptable site planning is founded on the belief that for a home to remain affordable, it must be adaptable to different kinds of families and site conditions while remaining amenable to mass reproduction in high-density projects. The plan's additional cost savings are achieved through engineered construction components, donated materials and sweat equity. Three elevation styles give the plan an individual character that contributes visually to the street scene. The home was developed to instill pride of homeownership and community while meeting basic needs. Adaptability is one of the key elements that contribute to the project's success; the home can be built individually or as a part of a multiunit community.
