| A Memphis nonprofit association committed to providing free transitional housing and life-skills training for homeless mothers teamed up with a private foundation to fund the design and development of 12 two- and four-bedroom apartments. Two duplex buildings with wrap-around porches were designed to fit within the existing streetscape, establish a single-family character often absent in other affordable housing projects and give residents a sense of place and home. The architect's cost-efficient design located two four-unit townhome buildings behind the duplexes and eliminated the exterior common stairways typical of affordable housing. A "through" unit design increases each home's natural lighting. The two-story, two-bedroom townhouse plan features a living room, a galley-style kitchen and a dining area on the main floor. Two bedrooms on the second floor share a hall bath. Front porches and back yards provide outdoor living space. Presley Place accommodates parking for one car per unit. Overall density for the project is 20.33 units per acre. | |||||
