Lincoln Housing Authority

HUD SECRETARY'S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE
January 10, 2005

HUD PLATINUM WINNER:

Lincoln Housing Authority

Project Name: Northeast High School Houses on R Street
Location: Lincoln, Neb.
Designer/Architect: Lincoln Housing Authority
Square Footage: 1,466
Price: $89,000

For this project, two houses were constructed through a partnership of licensed contractors and Lincoln high school students. As a part of a residential construction course offered through the local school system, these houses replaced two deteriorated homes and significantly contributed to the revitalization of the surrounding historic-district neighborhood. The houses were designed to relate visually to the neighborhood's existing homes, which primarily consisted of traditional early-20th-century bungalows. Through the collaborative efforts of private industry, a nonprofit organization and local, state and federal agencies, costs were minimized. Upon completion, the houses were sold or leased under a lease-purchase program to former public housing tenants. The purchase price was set at the actual cost for construction.
