HUD GOLD WINNER:

Lawrence CommunityWorks Inc.

Project Name: The Summer Street Homeownership Project
Location: Lawrence, Mass.
Designer/Architect: Design Partnership Architects
Builder: DCT Development
Developer: Lawrence CommunityWorks Inc.
Square Footage: 2,492
Price: $82,500

Houses constructed through The Summer Street Homeownership Project are the first homes to be built in this infill neighborhood in more than 70 years. The project serves to stabilize one of the country's most financially distressed tracts by requiring buyers to commit to 15-year affordability and owner occupancy. Affordable to very low-income families (earning less than 40% of area median income), this project consists of two-unit homes in which the second unit can be rented out to help pay for the main living unit. The larger of the two units is a three-bedroom, two-bath plan with 1,350 square feet of living space. The second features two bedrooms and one bath in 1,142 square feet. The homes feature high-quality construction and appliances, energy-efficient design and operation, and low-maintenance landscaping.
