Located in southeastern Washington, this mixed-income, 314-home development provides attractive, appealing, well-built and affordable housing in a naturally beautiful but financially troubled region. This development is a part of an overall revitalization of the area, which is close to the Capitol, northern Virginia and several military bases. A cooperative effort among private developers, a community development corporation and the local public housing authority, the project also provided jobs to more than 40 local residents. It brings together for-sale homes, lease-purchase units, rental townhomes, garden-style apartments and housing for the elderly. The Elm is a two-story, 2 1/2-bath duplex/rowhome designed with a combined-space living/dining room, kitchen and breakfast area on the main floor. The second floor features three bedrooms.
