| Cooking and entertaining rank high among the social pastimes for residents of the upscale community where this beautiful Italianesque custom home is located, so a great kitchen is a must. The 23-foot ceilings in this home presented a dual design challenge for the kitchen: creating a more intimate atmosphere and providing necessary task lighting. The designer's solution was to create a grid of wood-veneer beams that are dropped to 16 feet and contain recessed lighting to warm the space. Deep display niches above the cabinetry break up the huge expanse of wall. Plenty of storage space for pots and pans below the professional-grade, five-burner, drop-in range keeps cookware close at hand. A decorative drywall hood and niche over the range add needed weight. Other top-of-the-line appliances include a dual convection oven and a combination microwave/standard oven. The kitchen's L-shaped island holds a sink and dishwasher and provides snack bar seating for three. The faux finish on the hood simulates carved stone. Flooring is light, carbonized bamboo. | |||||
