Project Name: Las Mariposas - Plan 1280.
Location: Coachella, CA.
Designer/Architect: John Hacker and Associates.
Builder: Self-Help Owner/Builders w/tech. support from CVHC.
Developer: Coachella Valley Housing Coalition.
Las Mariposas is a 168-home project developed by a non-profit organization to provide affordable housing in a rural community with a high rate of poverty. The three- and four-bedroom, two-bath homes were built using qualifying families' "sweat equity", approximately 40 hours per week for eight to 10 months. The Southern California-style homes include front porches, attached garages, tile roofs and central air conditioning. In addition to using self-help labor, costs were reduced by utilizing reclaimed steel for the structure, which represents a 25 percent cost savings over wood and is environmentally friendly. The homes were also designed to be energy efficient. Priced at $97,000, the area median is $240,122, the homes were available to buyers selected from a waiting list of low- and very low-income families.
