Visualizing your future

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 - 23:38
This pottery is the future. OK, not the pottery itself.  What the pottery represents… is the future.   Our future.      This ceramic artwork represents the age distributions of the US and Mexico, respectively. And the ages of our citizens allows us to gaze into the future.            And so,...

Gordon Gekko and the information imperative.

Thursday, January 24, 2013 - 12:45
Yesterday we revisited the information-gathering tactics of The Master of the Senate - Lyndon B. Johnson.       But when it comes to the most memorable method to gather info, you may recall the exploits of another master tactician - one Gordon Gekko.            Gekko, the classic antagonist in...

What LBJ can teach you about the most valuable commodity.

Early in Lyndon Johnson’s senate career, he lobbied for the title of Senate Majority Whip. The more seasoned senators chuckled.         Senate Majority Whip wasn’t a post senators lobbied for. You were drafted to be the Whip. You were sentenced to be the Whip.               The Whip gig...

Do you have Cool Hand Luke Syndrome?

Friday, January 18, 2013 - 11:14
Why has high school Spanish failed so many students?      Let’s face it - foreign language failure is acceptable in America today. Yes, I know it’s a requirement in high schools, but the vast majority of students fail to carry any real usable language skills into the real world.          This phenomena is...

What high school theology taught me about Spanish.

Wednesday, January 16, 2013 - 10:47
I attended a Catholic high school.        Nuns. Uniforms.  Morning prayers.  Mass injected into random school days.       And theology classes.              It was during a junior year theology class that clarified my philosophy on the Spanish language.  ...

Thinking outside the bun (and the punchlist).

Pop quiz!   Since we know you didn’t study, we’ll keep it brief. Only two questions, graded on the curve.   Ok, ok, ok… Yes. One of them can be multiple choice.              QUESTION #1. Name the 3 brands that make up YUM! Brands.          QUESTION #2. How many employees...

Why Hispanics on your job don’t speak English… to you.

People like to be recognized for their skills.     The holiday season, chock-full of family time, is a great atmosphere for positive recognition.            Like when your wife received a hearty applause for displaying the range of her double-jointed elbow.         Or when Uncle...

How stereotypes hinder effective communication… and clean cabinets.

Thursday, January 3, 2013 - 10:56
It was the typical Fourth Quarter Push.      We all knew the drill. Well, most of us did.            It was 2006, back before the meltdown. Back when homebuilders talked about “hiring well in advance of need” and financial analysts all agreed with the hiring philosophy.     This was...

In 2013, give the gift of MOPFI.

Thursday, December 27, 2012 - 12:38
MOPFI (MOP-fee)       Make Other People Feel  Important           The holiday season is rife with platitudes.  Things people say they don’t really mean.        “Thank you soooo much for the yellow argyle socks!” “Honey - I’m not implying anything with the gift of a...

What “The Elf on the Shelf” can teach you about productivity, leadership.

Thursday, December 20, 2012 - 15:12
The Elf on my Shelf isn’t working effectively.      Instead of duping my 5 year-old into behaving like a Christmas angel, it’s giving me a guilt trip. The footless red bandit is a constant reminder about my apparent inability to get my kid to do anything without a Christmas-based carrot and stick.      Reminds...
