About Chicago Athenaeum Good Design Award

The Chicago Athenaeum’s Good Design Award was established in 1950 by Edgar J. Kaufman, Jr., and is one of the world’s oldest and most celebrated awards programs. The program recognizes designers and manufacturers for advancing new and innovative product concepts that push the envelope beyond what is considered standard product and consumer design. Entries from more than 48 countries were submitted this year, adding to the prestige of the Sonja Mosaic Collection’s award recognition.

This is the first design award for the Sonja Mosaic Collection. An antique Roman influence is readily evident in the collection, as is its nod to more modern tastes. The updated color palette tends toward graphic boldness, with blacks, grays and creams accented by deep reds and yellows. The individual tiles in the mosaics are hand-cut marble and limestone—some are even sourced from ancient Roman quarries—and are painstakingly assembled by master craftsmen of Tunisia where the artistry and technique are kept alive today. The eclectic appeal of the Sonja Mosaic Collection—with 12 different pattern variations and a small brick field tile in seven different colors—makes it ideal for virtually any room of the home, as well as for light commercial applications, such as restaurants and boutiques.

Walker Zanger continues to receive recognition for its vast product line and extensive projects worldwide. In 2008, the company also received awards for product design from organizations including ADEX, Interior Design’s Best of the Year Product Design and the Marble Institute of America.
