Simplifying Exterior Design
Selecting exterior designs can be nerve-wracking for both the consumer and the contractor, but it is a decision that will impact the future value of the home.
Homeowners can expect returns of up to 106 percent on home project investments that involve siding, windows, doors, roof, and energy upgrades, according to a study by the National Association of Real Estate Appraisers.
Because exterior design can have a financial and emotional impact on the homeowner, selecting a home's exterior colors can be an intimidating part of the remodeling process. Homeowners may become overwhelmed by the many styles and products available, according to Owens Corning. Choosing colors can create a great amount of anxiety because they convey a strong message about the homeowner to anyone viewing the home.
The more homework the homeowner can do prior to the color-selection meeting with the contractor, the easier it is for all involved, says Dave Gillrie, Owens Corning's marketing and communication leader for exterior products.
To simplify exterior design for all involved, Owens Corning researched exterior design and developed five Exterior Design Collections: Garden, Lodge, Americana, Monticello and Tidewater. Each of the Exterior Design Collections captures a unique look and offers color palettes and accessories to complement it. Owens Corning has partnered with Style-Mark and Cultured Stone.
Although the style of the home can influence what palette will be used, a homeowner may still be unsure of what colors to choose. They can take a quiz on the Owens Corning website, www.owenscorning.com, to determine what their exterior style is. The psychographic quiz poses six multiple-choice questions and recommends one of company's five Exterior Design Collections based on the test-taker's style.
"It's not that we're telling people what is right and what is wrong," he says. Rather, these tools guide homeowners in their decisions. The result: Consumers choose looks that appeal to their lifestyles, and contractors can confidently recommend products that coordinate.
