Information Available On Wood Windows & Doors

The National Wood Window & Door Association provides a wide variety of tools to assist builders and other specifiers in decision making regarding wood windows and doors.

Foremost among these specifying aids are the association's standards, published and updated periodically to aid in the proper specification of a wide variety of products. Available standards include those for wood flush doors (I.S.-1), architectural wood flush doors (I.S.-1A), wood windows (I.S.-2), wood sliding patio doors (I.S.-3), water-repellent preservative non-pressure treatment for millwork (I.S.-4), wood and stile rail doors (I.S.-6), wood skylights and roof windows (I.S.-7), wood swinging patio doors (I.S.-8) and wood primary entrance doors (I.S.-9).

A second major contribution is a complete range of NWWDA test methods. These include soil block testing ((T.M.-1), swellometer testing (T.M.-2), paints and coating testing (T.M.-3), split resistance testing (T.M.-5), adhesive bond testing (T.M.-6), cycle slam testing (T.M.-7), hinge-loading testing (T.M.-8), door finishes testing (T.M.-9) and screw holding testing (T.M.-10).

The association also makes available a wide variety of informational literature. Included, for example, are guides to installation of exterior wood swinging doors and fire-rated wood doors. Guides suggest the best methods for the doors and of wood windows. Another guide describes factors to be considered in evaluating energy-efficient wood doors. Also available is a brochure that focuses on how to use wood windows and patio doors in passive solar applications. Directories include those of products certified by the National Fenestration Rating Council, manufacturers who participate in the NWWDA Hallmark Certfied Manufacturers Programs, and a complete directory of NWWDA members and their products. A guide assists specifiers in understanding the complicated use of face veneers and their terminology. And the booklet "Wood Windows and Doors, The Most Natural Choice," discusses the natural beauty, strength and integrity of wood products.

Informational videos include a 15-minute guide and workbook outlining proper installation techniques for wood windows and doors (available both in English and Spanish), and a 16 minute explanation on wood door and hardware compatability.

Also available is the "Specifiers Guide to Wood Windows and Doors," which contains a compendium of NWWDA standards and information literature. Contained within the guide are introductory remarks for properly using the product standards in construction specifications.
