Georgia-Pacific Show House to Highlight Innovation

The Georgia-Pacific Show House, one of the must-see displays at the 2004 International Builders' Show in Las Vegas, offers the construction trades a look at both new and time-tested products used in innovative construction applications.

The two-story GP House, designed by Beazer Homes USA and constructed just outside the convention hall, includes a superior floor system, mold- and moisture-resistant building solutions, energy-efficient products and construction techniques as well as a variety of unique decorating ideas for both builders and interior designers.

The high-performance flooring system consists of GP Wood-I-Beam™ joists and Plytanium™ Sturd-I-Floor. Bob Cox, host of The Healthy Home Show aired nationally on PAX-TV, touts the system as a better way of building. "The floor assembly of any quality-built house should utilize Wood-I-Beam joists coupled with plywood to get maximum structural integrity and sheer strength," said Cox. "That combination provides support you don't get with other assemblies. You can actually feel it when you walk on the floor. And, more important, your home buyers can feel it."

Cox continued, "It's essential to use quality products for flooring systems during initial construction because that's the most difficult -- and costly -- part of the structure to repair once it's built."

Building Better to Resist Mold Growth
Mold has no place inside the walls of the GP House with products such as DensArmor™ Plus Interior Guard and DensShield® Tile Guard included there. These panels, featuring revolutionary glass mat Dens Technology, are specifically designed to provide mold resistance* throughout the home.

DensArmor Plus, introduced at the 2003 Builders' Show, is engineered with inorganic glass mat facings that provide dramatically superior mold protection when compared with paper-faced wallboard products*. Not only is the product as easy to install as conventional wallboard, but it also is easy to finish and decorate.

The product has been recognized by building science experts as an important component in the fight against mold. Dr. Joseph Lstiburek, a principal partner of nationally recognized Building Science Corp., attested, "There are no other products on the market that even come close to providing the mold-resistant properties of DensArmor Plus."

Based on the same proven Dens Technology as DensArmor, DensShield Tile Guard ensures that tiled areas are mold-resistant*, too. DensShield is the only tile backer with a built-in moisture barrier, so no additional vapor barrier is required. In addition, when properly installed, the product carries a Lifetime Limited Warranty** on the entire tile installation applied over it.

DensShield has found favor with savvy builders, both large and small. Florida-based Arthur Rutenburg Homes uses DensShield in every project because, according to a spokesperson, DensShield adds value to the home. "Instead of using moisture-resistant drywall on shower walls," he said, "we install DensShield, which is a water barrier. This means surfaces behind the tile and grout are protected from moisture."

Tony Sherman, a leading tile contractor in Atlanta, uses DensShield not only for its mold resistance but also for monetary reasons. "My company has installed DensShield in more than 6,000 houses," Sherman said. "Since we switched from cement board to DensShield, my backer board callbacks have dropped to zero."

Green Is Golden
One of the energy-efficient building products found in the GP House is Plytanium ™ Thermostat™ Radiant Barrier Sheathing, a plywood product backed with aluminum foil. Studies have shown that Thermostat reflects up to 97 percent of the sun's radiant heat, preventing it from being absorbed into attics and living spaces. Thermostat Radiant Barrier Sheathing is ideal in hot, sunny climates or wherever improved energy efficiency and increased indoor comfort are desired.

"After comparing the characteristics of a variety of radiant barrier sheathings, I recommend Thermostat from GP," said Cox. "I feel it gives homeowners better energy costs ... and better resale value. That's a great marketing tool for me as a builder to share with a potential buyer."

The GP House can be toured Jan. 19-22 in Show Village at the International Builders' Show in Las Vegas. For more information on the products and processes used inside and out, visit the GP booth (#C-6247) at the show. An online tour of the house also will be available at www.gp.com/build beginning in January.

* When tested in accordance with ASTM D 3273
