Are Your Homes Futureproof?

As the number and types of home technologies grow and consumer demand for the same increases, it becomes harder and harder to ensure that your new homes are futureproof.

Here are a few simple questions in five key areas that The Leviton Institute suggests asking to make sure your houses rate as "connected homes." In each of these areas/applications, ask yourself the "are there" question.

Home Entertainment

 

  • Jacks throughout the house for video, high-speed Internet and computer networking for application sharing

    •  

  • Satellite television

    •  

  • Multiroom in-wall wiring that drives in-wall or in-ceiling audio loudspeakers for home theater, music or paging and intercom functions

    Communication

    •  

  • Telephone jacks throughout the home

    •  

  • A multiline phone system that supports multiple extensions

    •  

  • An intercom system to page and speak to other household members in every room

    Computer Networking/Internet Sharing

    •  

  • A home area network that lets inhabitants share information and peripherals

    •  

  • A broadband Internet connection such as DSL, cable modem or direct broadcast satellite

    Home Security

    •  

  • A system that sounds an alarm and reports to a central station

    •  

  • A closed-circuit television system that distributes video signals from surveillance cameras in and around the home

    Comfort and Convenience

    •  

  • A multiroom lighting control system that coordinates programmed lighting scenes for different settings

    •  

  • A home automation system that controls lights, appliances, heating, cooling and a security system

    •  

  • Energy-management controls integrated with the home's automation system to maximize energy efficiency and keep heating and cooling costs low. Also an opportunity to improve indoor air quality with a ventilation system

  • Remote controls for motorized window coverings
    •
